MUMS - A Shared Story of Motherhood, brings together work made by a community of new mums in workshops facilitated by Marie-Claire Lacey and 9 guest artists across Glasgow, alongside two new pieces by Marie-Claire, made in her role as artist in residence.

We want to create a dedicated space for you to ask questions and find out about how our project might touch on themes of your work.
Marie-Claire Lacey has spent the last 18 months developing a unique model for engaging with new mums through creative means to support their mental health and wellbeing and foster opportunities of community development.
As a mum to a young child, and an artist herself, she's also spent that time questioning how she can sustain an arts practice as a mother and how her 2 identities of "mother" and "artist" collide.

About the Exhibition
Marie-Claire, who devised and led the project, drew on autobiographical experience and themes that arose during the community sessions to create these two pieces. This approach highlighted the importance of making space for personal artistic research & development while leading community arts programmes, particularly within the framework of being a mother-artist; a context which presents changes to identity and selfhood as well as challenges to the availability of time and other resources necessary for art making.

Highlights include moving image works exploring maternal time, overwhelm, mental load, and the visceral experience of motherhood, large-scale collaborative psychogeographic narrated paintings, an interactive piece asking what ‘mother’ looks like, plus clay, textile installation, collage and text shaped by the stories, reflections and creative practice of a growing community of new mums and mother-artists.
